Why Lifextraordinary?

September 28, 2017

Along our journey in creating this website, many people offered their opinions on the name Lifextraordinary. For us, this is much more than a name but a decision to live life with passion and purpose while impacting others.

This originated from our family’s journey with our son Hawken. At seven months old, “Hawk” became the only known infant diagnosed with Burkitt’s Leukemia, a rare, fast-growing type of leukemia in which the the cancer cells double in the body every 24 hours. Due to the aggressiveness of the disease, the treatment regimen was equally aggressive with an unknown prognosis due to his age. Our family lived in the Cleveland Clinic for six months, and it was through Hawk’s heroic journey that Lifextraordinary was born.

“It begins, as most things begin, with a song. A song can last long after the events and the people in it are dust and dreams and gone. That's the power of songs.” These words by Neil Gaiman could not be more true than in our case. During his most difficult days of suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy, we would play the song, “Life Less Ordinary,” by Carbon Leaf. It was, on many days, the only thing that would calm Hawken. And while we are sure the beat and rhythm of the song is what soothed Hawk, it was the lyrics, that resonated us: “Live a life less ordinary. Live a life extraordinary with me.”

Hawk’s heroic journey continues to teach us life lessons including ones on perspective, perseverance, and purpose which is the inspiration for Lifextraordinary. We have also learned to value and appreciate others, even strangers, who have something extraordinary to tell.

This web site is designed to assist and organize support for those facing a crisis or those desiring to do something great within their own lives or the lives of their community. Through either experience, we believe much can be gained in sharing stories and helping others--we believe we can live a life less ordinary--a Lifextrarodinary.
